Made in 2015–2016 while Calvin Brett was living in New Mexico—
first out of a truck and later with only what he could carry in a
backpack—these drawings translate moments of awe in the
landscape into lines, symbols, and repeated forms.

Drawing on Afrocentric traditions of rhythm and visual dynamism,
the series favors intuition and abstraction over realistic representation.

Each image is available as a 10 × 10-inch open-edition print, with free

800 Print

800 cubes - representing the 800 million people living in extreme poverty- arranged in an optically illusionary way. Building on the African tradition of studies in rhythm, this work is a continuation of that focus and mode of study. 

About

Calvin Brett is a North Carolina–based interdisciplinary artist who transforms discarded materials into sculpture, installation, assemblage, painting, video, and public interventions. Drawing on natural systems, African and American folk traditions, repetition, and intuition, his work explores ecology, identity, labor, memory, and the cultural value of overlooked objects.

Brett trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the MIT Museum, Elsewhere Museum, Lump Gallery, and other venues, and is held in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Central University Art Museum. His residencies include Loghaven, Chautauqua Institution, Elsewhere Museum, and Perkins+Will Durham.
