Jagged black bands divide New Mexico Drawing #5 into irregular geometric sections. Inside them, closely spaced lines change direction and curvature, making the flat surface appear folded, faceted, or pushed outward. The high-contrast composition creates a strong optical effect while retaining the intuitive irregularity found throughout the New Mexico series. Landscape is reduced to pressure, direction, and structure—a bold terrain constructed entirely through rhythm and line. the forms may suggest abstract mountains, with the blue in the upper right and corner suggesting sky.
